Austell, GA is a city located in Cobb County in Georgia, and it’s part of the greater Atlanta Metropolitan area. Before it became a city, the Austell area was often visited by trappers and game hunters who made use of the area’s salt licks – and these early visitors also claimed that the Austell area waters were therapeutic and had medicinal properties.
That’s why Salt Springs – the precursor to Austell – was founded. Patients began visiting Salt Springs to use the waters in the area, and immigration continued to increase with demand for the spring, which was named “Lithia Springs” due to the presence of lithium carbonate within the water.
A neighboring settlement also known as Lithia Springs was founded in 1882. Salt Springs became incorporated as Austell shortly thereafter, in 1885. The spring water in the area is still bottled and sold under the brand name Lithia Spring Water.
Today, Austell is a major stop on the route of the Georgia Pacific Railway between Birmingham and Chattanooga. It had a population of 6,581 as of the 2010 census, and is well-known for its extensive parks system, lively antiques stores, close-knit community, and numerous local eateries specializing in making food with locally-grown produce.
