The bark was stripped off of this tree to make it more conspicuous, hence the name. Once it was incorporated in 1875, Douglasville was named after Senator Stephen A. Douglas.

Its downtown district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, due to the multiple 1 and 2-story buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
