The city of Emerson, GA is located at the southern end of Bartow County. Before it became Emerson, the settlement was often called “Stegall’s Station,” after Ensley Stegall and his family, who were South Carolinian farmers who moved to the area and became prominent in its history. It was first settled in the early 1840s.
Quickly thereafter, the development of the Western and Atlantic Railroad in Georgia in 1850 caused additional families to move to the area and a spike in population, since everyday needs became more accessible.
The Civil War was extremely destructive to the region, with local railroads, ironworks, and crops destroyed in the aftermath. However, the area was quickly resettled after the war. Emerson gained its current name in 1889, when it was incorporated officially and named after Joseph Emerson Brown, who was Georgia’s 42nd governor.
Today, Emerson is home to around 1,500 people as of the latest census estimates, and it’s well-known for being one of the best gateways to Red Top Mountain State Park, a highly-popular state park in Georgia that’s surrounded by Lake Altoona.
It’s also home to LakePoint Sports, a top youth sports development organization, and historic Allatoona Pass Battlefield, one of the most historically-significant battlefields in Georgia.
