Lithia Springs is a census-designated place (CDP) in northeastern Douglas County, near the cities of Austell and Douglasville. Lithia Springs certainly has an interesting history – it was incorporated once in 1882, and then dissolved in 1933. However, it was re-incorporated briefly in 1994, until it was disincorporated again by Douglas County in 2001.
Lithia Springs was named after a local natural lithia water spring, which contained lithium carbonate. This water was believed to have healing properties, and attracted many people from miles around during the 1800s. This is what led to the founding of the neighboring city of Austell.
The water was eventually bottled and sold in the 1880s, and it’s still sold today by the Lithia Spring Water brand. In addition, a luxury health resort and hotel called the Sweet Water Hotel opened, attracting luminaries like Mark Twain, Theodore Roosevelt, and members of the prominent Vanderbilt family to the town, among others.
Today, Lithia Springs is still inhabited by more than 15,000 people, and it’s known for nearby Sweetwater Creek State Park, which is home to the George Sparks Reservoir, a popular recreation destination. The nearby ruins of the New Manchester Manufacturing Company, which was destroyed in 1864 during Sherman’s March to the Sea, are also a short hike away, and are a popular attraction.
